Published by Rizzoli NY, A Natural History of Louis Vuitton City Bags combines a unique, appealing approach with almost a scientific play on iconic shapes.
The first comprehensive taxonomy of Louis Vuitton's City Bags, a range of women's handbags that date back to turn of the 20th century. Featuring the trademarks of the House, City Bags represent the most successful line of accessories in the history of modern fashion - and were instrumental in making Louis Vuitton synonymous with modern luxury.
These soft-sided bags grew out of the various pieces of portable luggage that were themselves packed inside the trunks and wardrobes that had long ago represented the heritage of the company.
A classic Natural History book, this work is presented in a canvas clamshell with marble paper and a set of eleven illustrated plates. This limited edition is on sale exclusively for Louis Vuitton stores and on louisvuitton.com.
LOUIS VUITTON - MARC JACOBS is a story of two personalities and their contributions to the world of fashion: Louis Vuitton, founder of the house of Louis Vuitton in 1854, and Marc Jacobs, its artistic director since 1997. The parallel stories of Vuitton and Jacobs permit an in-depth look at the fashion industry during two decisive periods, one beginning with 19th century industrialization and the other peaking in 21st century globalization.
This exhibition devoted to both creators will showcase Louis Vuitton's trunks with the museum's 19th century fashion and accessory collection, and a selection of Marc Jacob's most emblematic designs, retracing the last fifteen years of his career at Louis Vuitton.
VUITTON is not a fashion company. We make 'fashionable' things, we introduced the idea of fashion, which changes according to the mood of the times, the icons of popular culture. But the heart of the brand remains unchanged and unchangeable, which is just as well. ~~~ Marc Jacobs
The Vuitton style patiently elaborated by Marc Jacobs swings back and forth from season to season in order to better define the "LV" woman who is always on the go, always in tune with her times.
In a unique event organized in cooperation with Louis Vuitton, German artist Hans-Peter Feldmann will be showcasing his famous light installation "Shadowplay" on a screen in front of the new Louis Vuitton Maison in Munich's former Residenzpost building. From November 19 and well into the next year, the art project will be on display for the public from dusk onwards.
In Hans-Peter Feldmann's work Schattenspiel ( Shadow Play, 2002), the artist places found toys, souvenirs, ornaments, household objects on slowly revolving platforms. Simple spot lamps project their shadow cyclically spinning around across the back wall. The figurines weave in and out of each other in perpetually shifting combinations, creating a magical world of shadows. Feldmann uses simple tricks to manipulate the found objects and give them a new life.
The original artwork itself is presented at the Pinakothek der Moderne as part of the artist's exhibition from November 19 2010 to February 2011. It was filmed in advance to be displayed on the outdoor screen of the new Louis Vuitton Maison.
Feldmann is widely recognized for his conceptual approach to books, photography, found images and other material.
Like the best advertising and the best art, the windows' statements are nothing if not memorable. Some displays are legendary for their artistry, detail and sly visual jokes.
Here is a selection of elaborate and spectacular window displays.
